Jerusalem artichoke : Helianthus tuberosus 'Dwarf'
The cultivar name of this plant is very apt, as it is possibly the only truly dwarf form. It only grows half the size of all other named forms at approximately one metre, or 3 feet. There may however be the same number of leaves fitting on the stem, which also gives it a much denser appearance than the more open leaved "normal" shape.
The tubers are red-skinned and not normally knobbly. They are also grouped closely round the stem base either on a very short rhizome or no visible rhizome at all, making it much easier to harvest all the tubers and leave no "volunteers".
I have read on an American website that this cultivar was breed in the Netherlands, but further information was frustratingly absent. If true then it could well be a hybrid with some other Helianthus species, thus explaining the different habit of growth.
